The difference between a chimney piece and a mantle piece is that a chimney piece usually surrounds the fireplace and flows upward, sometimes all the way to the ceiling; whereas a mantle piece is usually just a shelf above the fireplace. A chimney piece may contain a mantle.

When considering whether or not to redecorate or even remodel a room, you should consider how well the chimney piece fits in with the current style as well as the new motif. If your room theme incorporates a specific shape, a fleur-de-lis for example, you can add a piece of wood cut to the shape and painted or stained to fit the room.

If your room is dark and has an almost spooky feel to it, consider adding an antique chimney piece in the gothic style. These are usually made of carved stone but can also be made of marble, cast stone or even wood. The gothic style may have gargoyles or faces appearing in the details.

For a more flowing, rounded look, search for a Romanesque style chimney piece. With the round or vaguely pointed arches and simple columns, this is a great style for a sleek, minimally decorated room. These are usually made of brick or cast stone but can also be found in other materials.

Looking for a chimney piece with straight lines? Then what you want is something in the Renaissance architectural style. With its simplistic outline, the antique renaissance style lends itself well to an otherwise modern room.

So where do you go to find an antique chimney piece? Look for an antique architecture dealer in your area. The older region you live in, the more likely youll find an architectural antique dealer nearby. You can also search for one online. When searching online, include as much as you know about your ideal chimney piece. Limiting the style, material and color will help narrow your search considerably.

Remember, antiques are limited, so you might have to do some searching and practice patience.
