Domain Names - A Market of Great and Growing Importance

Buying and selling domain names is big business. The nature of the birth of the internet is one of the great reasons why domain names have become so important, and have garnered so much monetary attention.

This year, 15 names used in Internet addresses have resold for at least six figures to companies and individuals hoping to tap into big audiences. On.com got $635,000. Macau.com fetched $550,000.

Sex.com went for a record $12 million in cash and stock to adult-entertainment company Escom in January, according to industry-trade reports and sources with knowledge of the deal, who declined to be named because of the private nature of the sale.

As the internet began to grow and become more and more important, more and more normal entrepreneurs realized the potential of this new tool. However, many of these businessmen and women logged on to find their trademarked phrases and titles already used by other users with different intentions. Under these pretenses, the market for domain names was born.

Today the market is dominated by this foray between big, established, business and those who came to the Internet first. We see many transfers between companies as those who were able to get their names first, sell their URL's to big companies who have been slower to join the World Wide Web.

These transactions represent very big business, and are creating a very important market of their own. Sales of 5,851 domain names generated $29 million in 2005, compared with the sale of 3,813 names for $15 million in 2004, says market researcher Zetetic. And the pace is quickening: In the first three months of this year, 1,949 names have generated $14.2 million, says Domain Name Journal magazine.

"The domain name is 21st century real estate," says Warren Adelman, president of GoDaddy.com, the world's largest domain name registrar, with 12.9 million. "The economy is being increasingly driven by the Internet sector."

What's in a Name?

One of the first considerations when starting a new blog or website is the name. What domain name you choose goes much deeper than just the name of your site. Yes you want it to say who you are and what your site is about but it goes deeper than that; unless youre trying to brand yourself. That being said, branding requires a lot of money; or, a lot of time spent marketing & promoting and a certain amount of luck. Sites like eBay or Amazon have huge budgets to work with so unless your another Donald Trump, then consider choosing a name based on sound keyword research and SEO considerations.

What does keyword research have to do with choosing a site/domain name? In short everything. Depending on the purpose and format of your site, it can make the difference to seeing some search engine traffic in 4 - 6 weeks and never seeing any. Now the reason I say depending is this. If your creating a blog, or an article based site, then you can use keywords per post; keywords in the title and in the post itself; and the search engines will pick up on this and rank that post by itself. I currently have hundreds of search terms coming up on the first page of Google that are for the most part unrelated as in Yes they are all digital products but the search term doesnt say digital or ebook.

One of the first steps I take when choosing a new site name or domain name is keyword research. For instance; lets say that youre going to create a jewelry site. Jewelry, if you do a keyword search, has huge traffic and huge competition. But by doing a keyword search using a good keyword tool use can break this down. I always look for modest traffic and competition. If there is no traffic to a keyword, obviously you dont want to use it.

I always try to find a keyword or keyword phrase that has at least 5000 monthly searches. Once I find one that interests me; that is related to what my site will be about, I do a Google search to see what the competition is like. Here you want some competition but not too much. The number I look for is 1.5 million results or lower.

Also I check to see if there are lots of sponsored ads for the search term. With this criteria, you know there is money in this keyword otherwise nobody would be paying to have ads on it and the search results would be low or nil. You can take this one step further by looking at what the top Sponsored Ads are costing. This will give you an idea of the potential earnings this keyword could bring you. If you know that the top ad spot is costing $5 per click, you can use some generic conversion rates to determine what a sale might be worth. This will of course only be an approximation but itll give you an idea of whether to proceed to not.

Lets use broad numbers like 5 15% conversion rate. For every 100 visitors, they would realize between 5 and 15 sales at a cost for advertising of $500. On the low end they would break even if they were making $100 per sale. The conversion rates could be lower or higher of course so here it becomes a judgment call. You can educate your guess further by doing some research through affiliate site to see what the average commission is for this particular niche.

Long story short; spend 95% of your time researching the name of your site of blog before casting it in stone. In the long run youll be extremely glad you did.

Cheers

Joseph

Ever-Lasting Habits of Highly Profitable Webmasters

This article details a few simple things that seasoned webmasters do that allow them to pull ahead of their competition. As a savvy web hosting customer and webmaster, these are steps you can take yourself.

1. Off-site Backups - It amazes me whenever I hear of a website hosting user complaining about "that great twenty-dollars-a-year website host I was using that disappeared and took all my files with them!" This is a consistent complaint in the industry, and it is so easily prevented. How do savvy webmasters avoid losing their files? Keep a backup either at your physical location, or on a web server in a different geographical region than the one your website is hosted on.

2. Independent Domain Registration - The second most-common complaint is a domain name that is held hostage by a web host, either because of misunderstanding between the client and the host, or because of an underhanded host. How can you prevent this? Register your domain name at GoDaddy.com, Netsol, Register.com, eNom, or one of the other domain registrars. Then, just point the domain to your hosting account. This way, if your host goes under or you decide to cancel your hosting account, you won't have to worry about losing your domain.

3. Good Client-Host Host-Client Relationship - As lame as it may sound, it helps to have a positive relationship with your host. You need to trust them 100%, and they need to trust you 100%. If this is not the case, neither one of you are benefiting the other, and it is a relationship that should be broken off.

4. Regular Website Updates - Want to know what irks users more than anything else? A website that never changes! Even if you have only five minutes a day to devote to managing your site, you should have some little tidbit of information that changes on a daily or weekly basis. Site visitors like to know that there is really a living, breathing thing on the other side of that website, and one way to convey this is by showing change.

5. Prompt Reply to Emails - Well, maybe this irks users more than anything else. It's probably a toss-up between points four and five. But the point is this: When someone sends you an email, they expect it to be answered right away. So answer it right away! If you can't do this, hire someone who can. One of the best things you can do for your company's image is to answer every single customer inquiry in a super-fast manner. Not only does this impress your customers, it also shows them that you truly care.

Follow this advice, and I guarantee you'll see more success from your web-based business!

Getting The Cheapest Online Contents Insurance Quotes

When it comes to getting the cheapest online insurance quotes then you could spend hours searching the net yourself. However, by far the easiest way is to go with a broker who will be able to get you the most comprehensive contents policy while saving you on the premium.

The first factor you have to take into consideration when it comes to deciding on how much you need to be insured for is the total value of the contents of your home if the worst should happen and they were totally destroyed. It can be surprising how much the value of contents come to and sadly, many people find that they have underestimated the value of their belongings and as such are under insured. However on the other hand if you are just making a wild guess then you could over estimate the cost and end up paying out more for your premium than you need too.

When it comes to taking an inventory of your contents dont forget to include such things as any collections you may have built up such as CD;s and DVD;s and also the contents of your wardrobe. All the little things can add up along with the bigger items. If you have items of particular value you may need to take out extra insurance to make sure that these are covered. Any very expensive items of jewellery or art for example might not be covered in a standard policy so it is always worth pointing out if you have such items in your home.

A broker will be able to get you the cheapest contents insurance quotes that are most suitable for the type of cover that you need and this includes any extras that you might have to take out to cover expensive and usual items in the home.

Make Sure Your Loved Ones Are Protected

Of course we all want to remain optimistic for the future which could perhaps cause some of us to shy away from the notion of life insurance - it can feel like a rather morbid thing to be considering. Maybe it's necessary to think objectively about why it's a good idea, imagine, for instance, what would happen to your family if you were to pass away today. Would they be able to cope financially if your current life insurance is insufficient or you have no cover at all? Consider for a moment the impact on your families income should your contribution be taken away.

To be blunt, for anyone with a family depending on their income life insurance is a must. Essentially, as with any insurance policy, you're paying for piece of mind, the confidence that should those who mean the most to you no longer be able to depend on your financial support they will at least be able to maintain the standard of life you would want them to.

If you are the main breadwinner it should at least be a priority to have enough life cover to pay off your mortgage and other significant debts, leaving your family with the burden of debts they can't afford to pay off isn't something anyone would want as a legacy. Yet somewhat surprisingly as many as a quarter of homeowners don't have enough cover to pay off the mortgage, a fact which serves to point towards a gaping disparity in the UK between the cover we should have and that which we currently do have reports suggest we're a staggering 2,000,000,000,000 short!

So if you haven't already it really is time to give life insurance some though, here's a brief guide to the options:

The basic types of policy are term insurance, endowment insurance and whole life insurance.

Of these term insurance is the most affordable option. This is a policy that will run for a specific period of time as chosen by you at the time of application. There are a few possibilities here level term insurance where the sum insured will remain level, decreasing term or mortgage protection insurance which will see the sum decreasing in line with the reducing balance of a capital repayment mortgage or increasing term where the sum will increase according to RPI or a fixed percentage. It is worth bearing in mind that the policy will only pay out if you expire before it does.

As the name suggests whole life insurance provides cover throughout your life and will only end at the point of your death, regardless of how old you live to be. In many cases they will be associated with an investment and thus prone fluctuating premiums. Because a payout is pretty much guaranteed Whole life insurance can be pricey.

Endowment policies are often taken out with decreasing term insurance to hopefully counterbalance diminishing payout based on a decreasing mortgage debt. Their accumulation does however depend on investment markets so nothing is guaranteed.

Improving Your Home With An Antique Chimneypiece

The difference between a chimney piece and a mantle piece is that a chimney piece usually surrounds the fireplace and flows upward, sometimes all the way to the ceiling; whereas a mantle piece is usually just a shelf above the fireplace. A chimney piece may contain a mantle.

When considering whether or not to redecorate or even remodel a room, you should consider how well the chimney piece fits in with the current style as well as the new motif. If you are changing styles to a more classic, antique look but have only a simple mantelpiece you may want to consider a more elaborate focal point, like an antique chimney piece.

If you want to keep the chimney piece because of the style but dont care for the color, you may be able to refinish it. Wood lends itself best for refinishing, either with natural stain or paint, or a combination. Cast stone chimney pieces can sometimes be dyed to another color as well. You wont be able to change the color of a marble or carved stone chimney piece, though.

Another way to change the look of your chimney piece is to add a mirror above the mantel shelf. Or, instead of a mirror, add a large print of a piece of art that fits in well with the room design. If your room theme incorporates a specific shape, a fleur-de-lis for example, you can add a piece of wood cut to the shape and painted or stained to fit the room.

If your room is dark and has an almost spooky feel to it, consider adding an antique chimney piece in the gothic style. These are usually made of carved stone but can also be made of marble, cast stone or even wood. The gothic style may have gargoyles or faces appearing in the details.

For a more flowing, rounded look, search for a Romanesque style chimney piece. With the round or vaguely pointed arches and simple columns, this is a great style for a sleek, minimally decorated room. These are usually made of brick or cast stone but can also be found in other materials.

Looking for a chimney piece with straight lines? Then what you want is something in the Renaissance architectural style. With its simplistic outline, the antique renaissance style lends itself well to an otherwise modern room.

So where do you go to find an antique chimney piece? Look for an antique architecture dealer in your area. The older region you live in, the more likely youll find an architectural antique dealer nearby. You can also search for one online. When searching online, include as much as you know about your ideal chimney piece. Limiting the style, material and color will help narrow your search considerably.

Remember, antiques are limited, so you might have to do some searching and practice patience.

Applying For SSA Benefits: How Disability Is Determined For Disability Benefits?

Disability benefit is a handy economic aid and helps the disabled to a great degree. But it can, at times, be a little difficult to get hands over these aids. For, mere your thinking that you are disabled is not enough, the government should also share the same views with you. And until and unless it does, the exchequer will not release a penny.

The disability determination begins with the field offices of the Social Security Administration where one is supposed to file an application for disability benefit. One may approach the authorities on telephone, by mail or may simply fill and submit the form online.

The application form requires one to provide information about one's disability, treatment and other associated information. The field office then finds out if one fulfills the non-medical requirements for the benefits. For instance, one may be barred from getting the benefit due to old age. After having gone through it the field office sends one's case to any of the DDSs (Disability Determination Services) for an evaluation of the disability. These DDSs are funded and maintained by the government and are enjoined with the duty to find out if the claimant's disability is of the kind that makes him eligible for the benefit under the law.

The DDS's first source for such determination is the claimant's own medical sources. If the medical evidence provided by the claimant is insufficient for the determination of his case, the DDS goes in for Consultative Examination (CE) so as to obtain the missing information. Even for the CE, the DDS prefers the claimant's own sources but they may opt for the examination by an independent source instead. After the DDS is satisfied that the claimant's disability is serious enough, it sends the case back to the field office, after which the SSA computes the amount to be paid, and starts paying the benefits.

In case the claimant's case is not found fit for the disability benefit, the case is rejected, the file is closed and is kept in the field office for future reference if the need arises. A claimant may challenge the determination in appeal, in which he or she is given due hearing, and, if the need be, the case is reevaliated in order to ensure that no genuine claim is rejected.

Al Gore and Live Earth

Isnt it amazing how vocal the doom-sayers are, and all the time. They never let up. What is it with them. I have often wondered at the folk that are around that always have to tell you that it wont work, waste of time, bad idea, not worth the effort and many many more negative statements.

There they are, dependable as ever, sprouting out about the bad things about the Live Earth concerts. There was an article on newsvine that was ridiculing Madonnas performance at the concert. I only read the first paragraph, but there were already 146 comments and umpteen votes for the article. Im sure I could find a huge amount of bad things to say about the concerts, for instance the one in Germany wasnt as full as the organisers had hoped.

And of course the concerts would have used electricity, water, created plastic cup waste etc etc. Loads of things that one could find wrong with the whole idea. But then there are loads of things right with it as well. First of all, it got the word out to a fair number of people, in fact thousands, that the earth is worth looking after.

That message might not be that important to those negative individuals. Im sure for them the earth is doomed already in any case, or else, they have their head buried in the sand and are pretending there is nothing going on.

After all there is no global warming. No destruction of fauna or flora, nope, nothing happening. No major Tsunamis, forest and veld fires, no earth quakes, no floods, no hectic droughts, no increase in temperature and definitely no hungry people. All those are in the imagination of some scaremongers.

Lets give credit where credit is due. Al Gore, the person who a lot of Americans wrote off as a non-leader during the elections which somehow went to Bush, the guy who people said was colourless and bland and no true leader. This same person has not only won an Oscar for a documentary, he is short listed for a Nobel peace prize.

This supposedly boring individual has managed to enthuse people to hold world wide concerts to kick start an entire public relations and advertising campaign to get the message of Live Earth across. And it is good that he is talking to the youth. The older generation are already recycling and worrying about the sustainability of the earth and its hugely growing population.

The concerts are the start of a three year campaign to actually mobilise mankind to rethink how the world is being treated. Gore has been taking his talk and slide show around the world already. He has spoken to thousands. He needs help. He cannot do this on his own.

By creating an awareness globally, he is also hoping that he might be able to fire up some further disciples and have some help to get the message across. It will be interesting to see how he fares with this. Instead of criticizing we should be eternally grateful that somebody is BOTHERING.

How to Cut the Cost of Your Healthcare

With the cost of health care rising four times over the rate of inflation and more and more employers placing the burden for health care on their employees and retires, American's are finding it harder to maintain coverage. By investing a little of your time you can cut the cost of your healthcare.

Shop Around Once a year investigate the different health insurance providers and what they offer, see if you can get a better deal.

Read Take the time to read your policy handbook from cover to cover know exactly what it covers before you need to use it, so you are not hit with any surprises when you lease need it. If there is anything you do not understand ask your health insurance provider to explain it. Be prepared.

FREE Take advantage of yearly check ups, most health insurance policies include these in your coverage. If your health insurance does not then take advantage of free healthcare screenings offered in your local community and area. Check around and see what is out there. Also you take advantage of free flu shots.

Prescriptions Drugs When your Doctor hands you a prescription ask them for the generic form of the same drug. Call around to the drug stores in your area ask how much it will cost for the prescription. Not all drug stores are the same on price. If your healthcare plan does not cover prescription drugs and you cannot afford the medication and you fall in to the low income or senior category there may be a solution. Many drug comes will provide patients the medication free but you need your doctor to recommend you for the program. Ask your doctor about it. Also ask them for any samples of the medication.

Medical Equipment If you need medical equipment and your health plan does not cover it or the cost goes to the lifetime limit your provider will pay, you can rent or borrow them instead of buying them. A lot of people store wheelchairs, crutches and other such equipment in their basement or garages after they no longer need them. Ask family members and friends if they have any you may borrow. If you can not borrow or rent the equipment then buy it used.

Prevention A sure way to help prevent colds, flu and infection is by washing you hands often during the day especially before you eat or drink. Do not rub or touch your eyes, mouth or nose when you are out or around anyone who is ill before washing your hands. Another way to prevent getting sick is to take supplements, more and more evidence is pointing to the lack of nutrients or minerals as the cause of diseases and illness besides genetics.

Eating to stay healthy Cut back on your daily intake of sugar, red meat and caffeine. By cutting down on these three categories especially sugar and red meat will go a long way in helping you to stay health. And fight off heart disease, diabetes, inflammation, clogged arteries, obesity. Stop and think before reaching for the junk food. Remember you are what you eat.

Excise Exercise is another important part of staying health. Exercising three to four times a week for 20-30 minutes a week will improve your health and help in the prevention of illnesses.

Container Gardening Ideas

Most of the time when you think about a garden, your mind will come up with a picture of large lawns, some shrubs and some colorful flowers.

But what about those people who haven't got an outside space available but still want the joy of a garden? Or you may prefer the design flexibility of planting in containers.

A container garden could be the answer. You can use it for flowers or vegetables. It's totally your choice.

There's the added advantage that the containers can be easily moved, so you can rearrange them to your heart's content.

Choosing the pots that you use as containers is important. You may decide to use lightweight, plastic pots or your chosen design may lend itself to heavier, clay ones.

Using containers gives you extra scope when you are laying out your garden. You may decide to place some of your containers on top of bricks to give extra height to certain areas of your garden. Or you can choose to decorate your container pots to tie them in with the theme of your garden.

With container gardening, you can treat each plant individually. So if one plant prefers a particular type of soil, you can supply that for it. This will help to keep your plants healthy and adds extra variety that your neighbors can't match if they are using conventional gardening techniques. You can even move plants indoors for the colder winter months, so that they survive through to the next season.

In fact, a mixture of traditional and container gardening could be just the ticket for your garden.

Investigate more container gardening ideas and many other tips to keep your garden beautiful.

Car Accident - I Was Hit And Now What?

Car accident? Let the frustration begin! I know this because I was in one last week, and I did not know what to do or how to react.

I was a claim adjuster for several years before I went to law school, and even tough I handled hundreds of insurance claims alike, I never could comprehend how confusing a car accident really is.

Last week, I was sitting at a light when suddenly there was a "bum" and then another "bum". My seat broke and I was laying flat. I got up and I could not find my hazard lights, and I could not remember where I was going. Everything was simply a daze.

I just look at my car and realized there was no way I could drive home.

When the insurance adjuster called me and I told him what you just read, I could feel the frustration of the adjuster. The adjuster's questions in the recorded statement were very detailed. I must have sounded like the biggest idiot.

Mr. Quiroga, what is the name and badge number of the police officer that responded to the car accident scene?

uh? I was there and then and I was hit and I could not find my hazard lights and my seat was broken. That was my answer!

Ok, you get my point. A car accident happens and we just do not know what to do. I did not know and I had been dealing with every possible car accident you could imagine.

Here are the 10 most valuable tips I came up with:

  1. Get out of the vehicle only if you believe you are ok and/or if there is smoke.

  2. Make sure that others are ok. Ask the other driver.

  3. Be careful with what you say. Many adjusters will change your words to make it sound like you were apologizing for the accident because you were at fault. So a simple question like: is every one ok in your vehicle? will do the work.

  4. Call the police. You need to call the police to the accident scene. Do not trust others. In many accidents people will tell you that they call and never did.

  5. Exchange insurance information with the other driver.

  6. Do not move the vehicle even if you are blocking traffic. Let the police take a look at the scene and let them determine when to move the vehicle.

  7. If it is possible, CALL the other person's insurance carrier and determine if there is an active policy in force that would cover your car accident. If not, tell the police officer.

  8. Do not argue. Just listen and go sit down in your car if the other person is being anxious.

  9. Whenever you have the chance, report the accident to your insurance company. Most insurance agents will tell you that if the accident is minor to deal directly with the other party so your rates do not go up. In my opinion, this can backfire on you. If the other party starts claiming an injury (even if it is frivolous) and you failed to report the loss, Insurance companies can decline coverage because you breached your duty to report as outlined in most insurance polices. By reporting the car accident to your carrier, you are putting in notice of the loss. You can tell them that you will negotiate with the other party but if things get ugly, you will contact them.

  10. If the accident was of substance. Go see a doctor. When you are in a car accident, the adrenaline rush is great and it will hide any pain or injury. It is better to detect any injury or complication early on.

Drive safe and hope that others will!

All the best,

Vision Service Plan Insurance - Covers the Necessities of Sight

At some point in everybodys life there is going to be a need for corrective lens of some sort, whether they be glasses or contacts. As such its a good idea to look into and buy vision service plan insurance. Of course if this is provided for by the company you work for so much the better. Vision service plan insurance will generally cover the necessities of eye care leaving the cost of cosmetic enhancements up to the consumer to pay out of pocket.

Going online to find out about the nitty gritty of a vision service plan insurance policy and what they stereotypically provide is an easily facilitated task that any individual no matter how computer challenged they deem themselves to be. As with any type of insurance the cost of the plan depends on what type of coverage is sought after. The more you cover the more you will pay.

Most plans provide for an eye exam per year as well as lenses and frames for glasses or a set of contacts. Some plans can be set up with more coverage and a series of co payments. Coverage of getting glasses usually encompasses the following:

1. Prescribing. The eye exam and resulting prescription are done.

2. Frame selection. Help is given in choosing frames.

3. Accuracy of lenses. Once the lenses have been made and placed in the glasses making sure they have been done to specifications.

4. Fitting. At the time of pickup making sure that the glasses are adjusted in keeping with the individuals facial structure, this ensures proper vision.

5. Adjustments. This takes care of any subsequent need for adjustment due to general wear and tear.

Getting contacts usually entails the eye exam, prescription and then trying on and testing the new pair of contacts. Oftentimes the ophthalmologist suggests testing a new set of contacts out for a week or two before ordering a new set. Most vision service insurance policies cover the aspects of contacts that are visually necessary but as mentioned previously leave the cost for cosmetic embellishments-such as colors-up to the patient.

Do It Yourself Home Improvement

There eventually comes a time when most people are faced with the complex decisions of how to go about remodelling their home in the hope of giving it a better market value, or alternatively to just buy a new house. The average person may have a basic understanding of what is entailed with remodelling a home while others simply have no clue where to start.

Undertaking your own home improvement project can have many perks and advantages, not only to save money and ultimately increase the value of your home for a greater re-sale value, but also to increase your self esteem and enjoy your new surroundings. But how does one know where to start. Well due to the fact that most people have little knowledge in home improvement, they go on ahead and hire a contractor who ends up charging them a small fortune with optimal results. This can be opposed with a simple Do it Yourself home improvement guide which covers aspects such as installation and repairing of doors, tiling, ceiling fans, general household plumbing maintenance, foundation waterproofing options, window replacement and the list goes on. Now most people know there is good information out there on how to fix up your home, but how many actually make use of it due to time and difficulty constraints? That's when you turn to contractors. I make use of a guide called "Home Improvement Tips, Techniques and Ideas Guide" which covers more than 300 home improvement topics with 8 easy to read guides. 8 Link Popularity Methods Ranked For SEO

The name of the game in the new year is White Hat SEO. Search engines are too smart for quick-fix, questionable methods any longer. Building a quality link network for your web site is one of the most important aspects to web site promotion, whether it's for search engine optimization, affiliate programs, lead generation, or otherwise. Surprisingly, some people are still involved in methods that have been proven useless and even harmful for several years. One method that seems to stand the test of time is a link exchange: a simple, yet effective, way to increase your web site's link popularity. This is by far the most common method of acquiring incoming links.

The effectiveness of link exchanges has been discussed ad nauseam by the SEO community over the past few years. The major Google update dubbed "Florida" showed clearly that many link exchanges were starting to carry less weight than they had previously carried. Doing hundreds of link exchanges with casino, pharmaceutical, and loan consolidation sites, no longer produced top rankings on Google. Yahoo! has followed suit to some degree; however, MSN is still where Google and Yahoo! were several years ago.

Search engine comparisons aside, many people wonder if link exchanges are worth doing anymore. Are there more effective methods of obtaining quality incoming links? The truth is that it totally depends on your competition.

If the norm for obtaining backlinks in one market is to participate in forum discussion with linked signatures, and to swap links with unrelated sites, then simply doing a higher quantity of such basic tasks would put your site at the top of the rankings. If your site is in the field of search engine optimization, then more advanced methods of link development should be done. Such methods might include writing articles; getting paid directory listings at Yahoo!, bCentral, and Business.com; or investing in professional press release distribution.

It all depends on what your competitors are doing. Ignoring the quantity of SEO methods and focusing on the quality, a good ranking system for backlink acquisition methods is as follows, with #8 being the poorest and #1 being the best:

8. "Sign-up And Get 1000+ Links in 5 Minutes!"

Link opportunities of this nature are pure sp@m. In most cases, you will see a small form at the bottom of a links page, with a text field for your web site URL and one for your email address. Giving your email out to legit businesses is risky enough, but can you imagine how much junk mail you will receive if you start signing up to these kinds "opportunities"? This method is a complete waste of time.

7. Three-Way Linking:

If "Site A" refers to your web site, you may get link emails out of the blue offering a partnership whereby your site (Site A) links to the emailer's site "B", while his other site "C" links back to your Site A. This is one of the most abused linking schemes around today simply because Site C, the second of the mysterious stranger's sites, is usually nothing more than a farm of outbound links. Sure, some link popularity work has been done to obtain a decent PageRank value, but the value this site carries as an outbound link to yours is minimal at best.

The other downside to this is that search engines flag link networks once they see repetitive linking patterns between the same sites. If you allow your site to be linked up with these networks, it is not uncommon to see your site suffer a link popularity penalty and ranking drop.

6. Links from Forum Signatures:

These do not carry as much weight in terms of SEO as one might think. Yes, they are one-way links, and yes, they can be from pages that have content relevant to your site. But that doesn't mean much unless your links appear in a forum's thread that is popular enough to be linked to from static web pages, or the thread's URL doesn't contain many random characters (historically they have been harder for search engines to index). Most pages at a forum are only linked to from one other page: the main category of the topic. Getting links on pages with little to no link popularity themselves won't help your site much.

Some forums even use a 'nofollow' tag on outbound links as a means to curb link spammers. By all means, if you are a regular participant at forums, mention your site in your signature for the purpose of creating awareness and click-through's from forum readers, but not solely for link popularity purposes.

5. Links at the Bottom of Your Clients' Sites:

If your customers have websites, you might be able to ask them to link back to your site as part of a contract, or simply out of the goodness of their hearts. Most times these links appear next to the copyright line at the bottom of the home page. A one-way link is good, but unless your customers run the same kind of business as you do, their site content won't be relevant enough to make this a high quality link.

A word of caution to search engine optimizers: As I mentioned in my previous article, Google Webmaster Guidelines You May Be Overlooking, Google specifically mentions how they don't like SEO companies forcing their clients to link to them. Realistically this may be tough for Google to enforce, but going against any of their official guidelines is never recommended.

4. Buying Text Links:

Be very careful when buying links. It can be an effective way of obtaining one-way incoming links if you can avoid getting into trouble. The major search engines don't allow anyone to pay for organic listings (paid inclusion programs such as Google AdWords and Yahoo! Search Marketing are separate). One could argue that due to the reliance on links for good rankings (acting as "votes" from one site to another), buying links essentially amounts to buying rankings.

Some web sites have been penalized and even banned entirely from the search index of major engines for using "black hat" link acquisition methods, including buying thousands of site-wide links in a short amount of time. If you plan on buying links, then keep a few points in mind:

i. Don't always use the same anchor text. If you buy a thousand links on the same domain, all using the exact same anchor text, it will appear unnatural to search engines.
ii. Your links should appear on pages with content relevant to your site's own content. This applies to all kinds of link acquisition methods.
iii. Buying thousands of links at once may send up red flags to search engines. At the very least, you will probably see a delay in those new links affecting your rankings, which can get expensive in the short-term.

3. Link Exchanges:

The Internet itself is nothing more than a network of links, and mutual linking is a big part of that. Outbound links on your site can hurt your link popularity if they are of low quality and/or unrelated to your site's content. Incoming links from low quality or unrelated sites are a waste of time unless you are just trying to get your site crawled by search engine spiders for the first time. When exchanging links, look at the PageRank value of the partner's home page, as well as the page your link will appear on; Make sure the page is indexed by the major search engines; Don't exchange with a page that has 100 or more outbound links on it; Make sure your link uses important keywords in its anchor text and is surrounded by relevant plain text. Link exchanges have the possibility to be a big part of your link campaign if potential partners meet a strict criteria for SEO.

2. Directory Submissions:

Directories can provide you with a one-way link on pages with highly relevant text. Some directories, like the Yahoo! Directory are weighted very heavily by other search engines. A link from these directories can be the most valuable link your site can receive. While there are thousands of free directories on the web today, paying for the more prestigious listings will go extremely far in not only increasing your link popularity, but also establishing a level of legitimacy with the major search engines. Junk and spammy web sites are a search engine's nightmare, but a search engine knows that basically all of these fly-by-night sites will never spend the $299 per year on a Yahoo! Directory listing.

1. Article Publication/Distribution:

Write a unique article on topic with your web site and create an author biography (or "resource box") that mentions your site and links back to it with relevant anchor text. Once you have finished writing your article, find a resource that reprints or publishes articles in your field and features them on their own pages that receive high PageRank values. Once the page your article appears on ages, your rankings will benefit. Hundreds of poor quality article reprint sites do nothing but harm the linking power of your unique content as well as waste your own time. Try to get your article featured on authoritative sites in your field instead.

Provided you write a well-formed and informative article, you might be surprised to see where it shows up months down the road. Bloggers and other web site owners in your field will want to offer your helpful information to their visitors as well. People who sign up to Google Alerts for keywords related to your field might also see a link to your article appear in their inbox.

Useful content is highly sought after on the Internet today. If you can provide others with unique and helpful writing, it will go a long way in increasing the exposure of your business or web site. As I mentioned above, what works best for your site will depend on your competition, budget, time and other factors. However, these eight link popularity methods should serve as a helpful guide for your SEO efforts.

What Does "Buy American" Mean?

A few decades ago it was easy to spot an import car. They were small, mostly 4- cylinder econo-boxes that were made in Japan or Germany. However, over the last 2 decades, more and more foreign manufacturers have built plants here in North America. Honda built the first Japanese manufacturing facility in Ohio in 1979. Today, Honda builds the Accord, Civic, Odyssey, and Acura MDX in plants in Canada and The United States. Toyota builds the Camry, Avalon, Corolla, Solara, Tacoma, Tundra, Matrix, Sienna, and Lexus RX350 in plants across Canada and the United States as well. Nissan builds virtually all of their vehicles in The United States including the Maxima, Altima, Titan, Armada, Frontier, Pathfinder, and Xterra. Mitsubishi, Subaru, BMW, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz also build cars throughout The United States. So do you still label a car an import if it's made in your own country? Are the Crown Victoria and Chevrolet Impala imports because they're made in Canada? What about the new Ford Fusion? Is that an import car? It's made in Mexico.

Okay, perhaps an import is a vehicle that is designed somewhere else regardless of where it is built. Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Nissan, Subaru and others have Research & Development centers in the United States (mostly in California). Many also have design studios there as well. So can a car still be labeled an import if it's designed and built and sold in The United States? The reality is that there are no longer imports and domestics. Ford builds cars in Europe, Asia and North America. As does General Motors. What about Chrysler? Is it still a domestic? Daimler-Benz (a German company) owns it. Is Bentley an English car company? Volkswagen AG owns it and most of the major components come from Audi. BMW owns Rolls Royce and the quintessential English car, the MINI. I wonder if people in England think of those cars as imports or domestics?

Unions here in North America want consumers to "buy American". At the Detroit auto show in January the UAW handed out bags at the Ford booth that said "Buy American" in big letters. Needless to say, it caused confusion, as I didn't know if they meant buy the Toyota Camry that is built in Kentucky or the Ford Fusion that is built in Mexico, or the Dodge Charger that is built in Canada and uses many components from the previous generation Mercedes E-Class.

Let's face it. Consumers should pick a car based on what's best, not on the location of a company's mailbox.
